I really wanted to like this book but it really fell short for me in a lot of ways Old MacDonald is a beloved song that is well known by most children It is a call and response story song and is intended for everyone to participate That is not the case with this book Most of the time the text doesn t flow or rhyme Also, there is no call and response, which children will expect from a book about Old MacDonald Also, this book is about a baby but has three tier vocabulary in it If I tried to I really wanted to like this book but it really fell short for me in a lot of ways Old MacDonald is a beloved song that is well known by most children It is a call and response story song and is intended for everyone to participate That is not the case with this book Most of the time the text doesn t flow or rhyme Also, there is no call and response, which children will expect from a book about Old MacDonald Also, this book is about a baby but has three tier vocabulary in it If I tried to read this book to 3 5 y o they would tell me immediately that they aren t babies It seems that perhaps the intended audience is babies and their caregivers but the book doesn t fit that audience I did really enjoy the illustrations and I applaud the family dynamics presented in the story This being said, I don t know who the intended audience is for this book As a children s librarian who reads aloud every day, I could barely read this I cannot expect a parent caregiver to be able to

I had high hopes for this book a new take on a familiar song, a multi racial LGBT family, cute illustrations, but the disjointed text just ruins the whole thing for me Old MacDonald who is, in fact, quite young is a stay at home dad taking care of an infant The animals come along to help as the baby is fed, played with, sleeps, and eats The illustrations of the animals interactions with the baby are very cute However, the lack of consistent meter and no rhyming outside of maybe two line I had high hopes for this book a new take on a familiar song, a multi racial LGBT family, cute illustrations, but the disjointed text just ruins the whole thing for me Old MacDonald who is, in fact, quite young is a stay at home dad taking care of an infant The animals come along to help as the baby is fed, played with, sleeps, and eats The illustrations of the animals interactions with the baby are very cute However, the lack of consistent meter and no rhyming outside of maybe two lines really brings things to a crashing halt I wouldn t recommend for storytime as the reader will most likely trip over the text

Watercolor and ink illustrations complement an updated version of the Old MacDonald tune In this version, the author imagines that Old MacDonald is a young father who stays home to care for his baby while his partner heads off to a job, presumably in the city Taking care of a little one is a lot harder than it might look, and he struggles with dressing, feeding, and entertaining the child It s a good thing that he has plenty of helpful farm animals to provide assistance since that baby seems Watercolor and ink illustrations complement an updated version of the Old MacDonald tune In this version, the author imagines that Old MacDonald is a young father who stays home to care for his baby while his partner heads off to a job, presumably in the city Taking care of a little one is a lot harder than it might look, and he struggles with dressing, feeding, and entertaining the child It s a good thing that he has plenty of helpful farm animals to provide assistance since that baby seems to be quite a handful While some of the lines work very well, others are awkward and break up the flow of the traditional song The poor farmer can t catch a break what with needing to change the diaper, bathe the kid, and watch out for tumbling blocks Even reading a book presents its own challenges since the little one isinterested in chewing on its cover and grabbing its pages than the story By the end of the day, Old MacDonald is completely exhausted, and his partner finds him asleep in a rocking chair while the baby nestles close to his chest It s clear that caring for a baby is a lot of work, but it s just as clear that all that effort is worthwhile and that this family consists of animals as well as two fathers and a child Readers will smile at the family portrait on a nearby table

3 starsThis was an interesting twist on the old classic Instead of going through various farm animals, this book goes through different activities the stay at home father Old MacDonald does with his baby What I found intriguing about this book was that, not only is this is an interracial, two father household, but the baby is also being raised by an older couple It s wonderful how different it is Miss Emily

I love the two dad family The new words to the song are funny, but, as others have noted, I think they might make it difficult to sing the book in storytime and have the families join in which is how I would want to use it ideally Looks fun for one on one or smaller group sharing, though Cute and funny illustrations

I don t know what it was about this one the not quite rhymes in the song made the flow a little bumpy And I just wasn t crazy about the illustrations Other than that it is two dads one stays home with baby on the farm while the other goes off to work The stay at home dad takes care of the baby and works hard to keep them occupied with the help of farm animals.

This is one of the worst books I ve read and the illustrations making that baby so ugly and egg shaped were just as terrible There was one redeeming quality about that book Loved seeing an interracial gay couple raising a baby Kudos to that
