RATING 3.5 stars Summary The Lightning Bolt is the fifth book in the Chain of Charms series, a middle grade historical fiction with some magical realism elements following two young gypsy children trying to save their family who have been arrested and sentenced to death during the reign of Cromwell Each book sends them on another little adventure to collect six different charms that will provide them with a bit of magic and help them free their family This particular story explores the foundr RATING 3.5 stars Summary The Lightning Bolt is the fifth book in the Chain of Charms series, a middle grade historical fiction with some magical realism elements following two young gypsy children trying to save their family who have been arrested and sentenced to death during the reign of Cromwell Each book sends them on another little adventure to collect six different charms that will provide them with a bit of magic and help them free their family This particular story explores the foundries and forges of this time in England.Characters 4 5 Our two main characters, Luka and Emilia are very sweet They re trying to do their best for their family They re set to be around 12 years old and I think that really shows through in that they re a little bit selfish sometimes, a little bit hot headed and not always the best at getting themselves out of trouble I was also quite impressed with how well the adult characters in supporting roles were dealt with in a very nuanced fashion Notably in this particular installment, we have an older man with some form of dementia who acts somewhat antagonistically at times I think the characters are pretty strong and complex, especially for a middle grade story.Setting and atmosphere 3 5 I think the atmosphere in this particular installment was perhaps less developed that in previous books in this series Or perhaps this is because this novel took place mainly around the forges, so the woodsy, gypsy atmosphere was less present That being said, the forges definitely felt hot and stifling, so props for that Plot 3 5 As with most middle grade stories, this had quite a simple plot This novel is only just over 200 pages of quite large font with some illustrations so there definitely isn t much space to develop a detailed and complex plot However, what it does provide is a fun little romp that also really pulls at the heart strings I read the last book in this series a while back, so I m not 100% sure if I m remembering correctly, but this book felt the most character driven, with the plot really focusing on character development I think this was important at this stage in the series, as otherwise it would start to feel like just a series of similar kids get chased, kids get away plots Writing Style 3.75 5 I really enjoy Kate Forsyth s writing style, especially in the historical fiction element It blends in the historical elements without being overly cheesy or info dumpy which I greatly appreciate Also I became fully immersed in the story I really cared about these kids and making sure they got out safely, and was really pulled to some of the new characters as well I think she does a great job of writing middle grade that is obviously accessible for younger readers but doesn t dumb things down too much, which I think some writers of this age bracket struggle with Bonus points Formatting 4 5 The illustrations that come with this story are adorable even if very minimalist

The penultimate book in the series and there is a lot of action in this one as the plot heats up and we get closer London and the finale The series continues to be entertaining and even though it moves along quickly it does not feel frenetic but well paced Another enjoyable read.
